East Hartford-based Connecticut Natural Gas said it has completed and activated a new $5.6 million gas main in Hebron that will supply energy to municipal buildings, businesses and schools.

The new 8-mile natural gas line will serve commercial customers as well as local schools, town offices and the fire department, CNG said. CNG is a subsidiary of Avangrid.

The town and regional facilities are converting their heating systems to use natural gas, with significant projected annual savings compared with other heating fuels. The regional schools are expected to save more than $101,000 a year, based on current fuel prices and previous usage. The Hebron schools and town buildings are projected to save nearly $34,000 a year, said Terri Eller, director of commercial and industrial sales for Avangrid.

The town and school district contributed a one-time payment of $758,000 in order to make the project viable.
