OCC: Electric supplier customers saw higher prices in Dec.

Residential utility customers who use a third-party electricity supplier paid more in December than they would have if they had contracted with the state's major utilities, according to the latest state report.

Eversource and Avangrid customers who contracted with third-party electricity suppliers paid a total of $4.6 million more in December than they would have under standard offer pricing from the utilities, according to a monthly report from the Office of Consumer Counsel (OCC).

Nearly 60 percent of supplier customers in Eversource's territory collectively paid in excess of $3 million more than the standard offer during the month, while 84 percent of supplier customers in Avangrid's territory collectively paid $1.6 million more than the standard offer, the OCC said..

From Jan. 2017 through Dec. 2017, Connecticut's residential customers paid a total of $46.3 million over the standard offer.

In December, retail suppliers served 26.4 percent of the Eversource market and 32.7 percent of Avangrid customers. Nearly six of every 10 retail customers in the Eversource market paid more than the standard offer, while eight of every 10 customers in the Avangrid market paid more, the OCC said.
