Middlesex Hospital's emergency department reopened over the weekend, following a Feb. 22 incident in which a local man deliberately crashed his car into the entrance before lighting himself on fire.

The man, Steven Ellam, 27, was transported to a burn unit at Bridgeport Hospital, where he later died from his injuries, Middletown Mayor Dan Drew tweeted on March 2.

Middlesex had been using a temporary emergency department, which it opened the day after the crash, located in an outpatient surgery area.

Besides Ellam, there were no injuries from the crash.

The emergency room reopened Saturday morning to both walk-in patients and ambulance transports, but the adjacent lobby is closed until further notice.

For now, patients reporting to the emergency department should visit a temporary entrance located in the hospital's tower on Crescent Street, officials said.

Middlesex says it has security personnel present around the clock.
