Connecticut homebuilding permits eased in August from a year earlier, but the year-to-date pace of single- and multi-family construction was still ahead of last year's, new data shows.

The state Department of Economic and Community Development Wednesday released the latest Census Bureau survey of housing permits granted in 104 cities and towns showing last month's count of 295 permits, 100 fewer than were issued by those same communities a year ago.

Through the first eight months of this year, those communities have issued a combined 2,612 permits, way above the 2,284 granted from Jan. to Sept. 2017, DECD data showed.

Still, this year's permit level has fallen far short of the 2,703 and 3,301 granted the same period in 2016 and 2015, respectively.
