Area's Jan. home sales down, median prices up

Hartford area house and condominium sales plummeted in January, but median prices rose, Realtors say.

There were 644 single-family dwellings sold in the first month of this year, down 20 percent percent from 805 units sold in Jan. 2017, the Greater Hartford Association of Realtors (GHAR) said Tuesday.

The median price for those sold units rose 7 percent to $209,000 last month vs. $195,300 a year earlier.

Condo sales fell 9.2 percent in Jan. to 168 units vs. 185 a year ago, GHAR said.

Their median price climbed 10.4 percent to $149,000 vs. $135,000 a year ago.

GHAR CEO Holly Callanan said tightened inventory of units for sales, plus January's cold weather, were likely factors in last month's sales slowdown.
