NEA doles $1M+ for CT's arts/culture

A number of Greater Hartford arts and cultural organizations and promoters are among 15 in Connecticut sharing more than $1 million in federal funds to support of their missions, authorities say.

The state Department of Economic and Community Development's (DECD) Office of the Arts and the governor announced Wednesday the grants are from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said NEA support is vital because this state's art/culture sector adds more than $9 billion in value to Connecticut's economy, and supports more than 57,000 jobs.

Area NEA grant recipients include:

  • Hill-Stead Museum, Farmington, $10,000 To support artist fees and sound production costs for the Sunken Garden Poetry Festival.
  • Connecticut Historical Society, Hartford, $30,000 to support the Connecticut Cultural Heritage Arts Program (CCHAP) and related activities in documenting folk life.
  • Connecticut Historical Society, Hartford, $25,000 to support the Southern New England Traditional Arts Apprenticeship program.
  • Connecticut State Office of the Arts, DECD, Hartford, $730,400 to support arts programs, services, and activities associated with carrying out agencies' NEA-approved strategic plans.
  • HartBeat Ensemble, Art Works, Hartford, $10,000 to support the Youth Play Institute, a professional paid internship in acting, playwriting, theater design, or stage management for young adults.
  • Hartford Symphony Orchestra, Hartford, $15,500 to support a community engagement initiative involving public schools and community organizations.
  • Wesleyan University, Middletown, $25,000 to support dance performances and residency activities at Wesleyan University's Center for the Arts.

  • Litchfield Performing Arts, Litchfield, $10,000
  • Artspace, Inc., New Haven, $75,000
  • Connecticut Players Foundation, New Haven, $10,000
  • Elm Shakespeare Company, New Haven, $15,000
  • Music Haven, Inc., New Haven, $25,000
  • Pilobolus, Washington Depot, $10,000
  • Westport Country Playhouse, Westport, $15,000
