South Windsor additive manufacturer Oxford Performance Materials Inc. (OPM) is teaming with a Tokyo-based materials supplier to build a manufacturing facility in Japan to expand its biomedical and dental businesses throughout Asia.

OPM on Monday said the partnership with Japan's JSR Corp., a materials supplier in a several technology-driven markets, will also advance its poly-ether-ketone-ketone (PEKK) 3-D-printed orthopedic devices throughout the area.

Under the deal, the companies will establish a "world-class" biomedical manufacturing and market development operation in Japan known as OPM Asia. The joint effort will help the companies "exploit" OPM's proprietary OsteoFab biomedical device 3-D printing technology and other materials technology.

The Japanese manufacturing facility is expected to open before year end and commercial products will be available to the Asian market in the second quarter of 2019, officials said.

OPM Asia holds an exclusive regional license that allows expansion in a broad area covering Japan, China, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and India, among others.

Asia's healthcare industry is projected to surge by more than 11 percent to $517 billion in 2018, which represents one of the fastest rates in the world, according to business consulting firm Frost & Sullivan.

"Asia's healthcare industry is growing rapidly, and with that growth comes increased demand for medical innovation that delivers improved clinical effectiveness to more people with superior economics," said Scott DeFelice, OPM's chief executive officer.
