UConn Health says it's the first in the U.S. to purchase a microscope with new augmented reality computer-generated digital imaging to assist surgeons during complex surgeries.
The high-tech microscope, known as the ARveo Augmented Reality microscope, will help surgeons at Farmington-based John Dempsey Hospital treat patients more safely through a variety of surgeries, especially neuro and spinal surgeries, officials said.
The device allows surgeons to improve magnification, resolution and surgical depth while viewing a patient's brain. The microscope assist surgeons focus on small blood vessels or nerves, officials said.
The microscope will be housed in the hospital's 1,200-square-foot hybrid operating room, which opened this spring.
"The advanced augmented reality, image-guided microscope allows us to go beyond what we can normally see with our naked eye and traditional microscopes," said Dr. Ketan Bulsara, a professor and chief of the Division of Neurosurgery at UConn Health.
The ARveo microscope, made by Leica Microsystems, is also capable of live-streaming video of a patient's surgical procedure on operating room screens.
