Artichoke Basille's Pizza will open its first Connecticut franchise location on Newington's Berlin Turnpike this fall, with more stores to follow, its franchise owner says.

The 1,600-square-foot, 35-seat restaurant will occupy 2391 Berlin Turnpike, next door to Puerta Vallarta Mexican Restaurant. It will employ 20 and will be the franchise's first free-standing location, said Artichoke Basille's co-founder/co-owner Francis Garcia.

Connecticut franchisee-operator Matthew Rusconi has the Newington location, Garcia said.

Founded in 2008 in Manhattan's East Village by Garcia and cousin Sal Basille to sell "New York-style" pizza, Artichoke Basille's Pizza has 12 locations in New York, Miami, and Berkeley, Calif.

It also has more than 10 stores in development and is scouting locations in Connecticut, including Cromwell, Middletown, and New Haven County, in New Jersey, and in northern California, Garcia said.
