Yale New Haven Hospital was ranked among the nation's best in nine specialties by U.S. News and World Report.

Yale New Haven Hospital ranked nationally in nine of 16 specialties — and edged into the Top 10 for psychiatry — in U.S. News and World Report's 2018 list of America's Best Hospitals, although several departments slipped in the rankings compared to last year.

The report, released today, compared more than 4,500 medical centers nationwide across 25 specialties, procedures and conditions, the publication said. Hospitals must make the Top 50 to earn a national ranking.

Yale was one of only 158 hospitals in the nation, and the only one in Connecticut, to rank nationally in at least one specialty. The report examined death rates, patient safety, procedure volume and other data, the publication said.

YNHH psychiatry climbed to No. 9 from 11 last year. Geriatrics and pulmonology tied for 23rd, slipping from their 2017 rankings of 15 and 19, respectively.

Ear, Nose and Throat fell from 22 to 27; gastroenterology/GI surgery slipped from 33 to 39; and neurology/neurosurgery and urology both dropped to 40th from 28 and 29, respectively.

Diabetes/endocrinology, which tied with urology for 29th last year, slipped to 34th. The hospital held its place in nephrology at 31.

"We have wonderful, skilled physicians and staff dedicated to providing safe, high-quality care to our patients," Dr. Thomas Balcezak, chief medical officer for the Yale New Haven Health System, said in a statement. "Our consistent recognition on the U.S. News list of best hospitals is a direct reflection of their commitment and hard work."

The Mayo Clinic claimed the No. 1 spot on the publication's Honor Roll for overall excellence, followed by the Cleveland Clinic and Johns Hopkins Hospital.
