Central CT hospitals dissolve urology joint venture

A urology services joint venture owned by three major hospitals is dissolving, according to a recent filing with state regulators.

Hartford Hospital, St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center and UConn Health's John Dempsey Hospital formed Greater Hartford Lithotripsy LLC in 1999.

Lithotripsy is a procedure for breaking down kidney stones.

According to an Oct. 12 filing with the state Office of Health Strategy, the venture has provided mobile lithotripsy services to each hospital, using a vendor, United Medical Services.

All three hospitals will provide their own lithotripsy services moving forward, according to an Oct. 12 certificate of need (CON) filing with the state Office of Health Strategy.

OHS responded on Oct. 17, saying it had determined a CON is not needed since the hospitals are not technically terminating any services.
