UTAS ending manufacturing at SoCal plant

The Windsor Locks aerospace systems division of United Technologies Corp. confirms it will wind down, starting next year, aeroparts production at one of its southern California plants, idling some 300 workers, due to waning parts demand for aircraft no longer made.

United Technologies Aerospace Systems (UTAS) acknowledged Monday published reports identifying UTAS's 80-year-old Chula Vista, Calif., facility as the shutdown target, beginning in 2019.

Some of the affected employees -- mostly union sheet-metal workers -- will be offered transfers to other UTAS facilities. However, some 1,500 workers will remain once the two-year transition to be completed in 2021, handling distribution support and other administrative functions, the company said.

"In July we communicated our plans to wind-down our manufacturing operations program in Chula Vista, CA, pending discussions with the union, which are ongoing," a UTAS spokesman said in a statement. "This action is due to decreases in production volumes as we near completion and sunset several legacy aircraft programs."

According to published reports, the factory over the years has generated parts for World War II bombers, the Navy's F-14 Tomcats, several models of jetliners and the space shuttle program.
