New-housing demand in Connecticut plummeted in September, with surveyed municipalities issuing fewer home-building permits than were granted the same month a year ago.

More than half the 242 permits issued last month in 104 cities and towns were for single-family dwellings, with the rest for multifamily buildings with two or more living units, according to the state Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD).

There were 407 housing permits granted statewide in Sept. 2017, DECD said, citing the Census Bureau's monthly permit samples.

Housing construction typically wanes with the onset of cooler, wetter weather.

Through nine months of this year, the surveyed communities issued 2,854 housing permits vs. 2,691 issued the first three quarters of 2017.
